Hepatitis D Defined
Known as “delta hepatitis”, it is caused by the hepatitis D virus (HDV). This virus can only co-infect patients who are already infected with hepatitis B. Hepatitis D infection is rare in the United States. It occurs primarily in recipients of multiple blood transfusions, including patients with hemophilia or those undergoing renal dialysis, and among people who share contaminated needles. There is no vaccine.
